The Ladies’ Section is an important and integral part of West Byfleet Golf Club with currently around 100 lady members, contributing both to overall participation in competitions and the many social events held at the club.
For 2017 the Captain and Ladies’ Captain have decided to combine fundraising efforts for Woking and Sam Beare Hospices rather than have a different charity each. Since the Woking Hospice first opened its doors in 1996, it has supported thousands of local patients and their familes through some of the most difficult times of their lives. It has now outgrown the premises and has moved to a brand new building in Goldsworth Park which is purpose built with state of the art equipment. Much fundraising is needed to equip it and it is hoped that our fundraising efforts will be sufficiently successful to equip two of the bedrooms. For this we need to raise £25,000.
A very successful Charity Bridge Drive in March was run by Ladies’ Vice Captain, Clare Cull, with help from Bryan Duffy. West Byfleet ladies cooked and baked and expertly served the teas to 80 ladies and gentlemen players resulting in a profit of over £900! West Byfleet has become quite famous for its Charity Bridge teas!
The ladies played their match against the BOBs (Byfleet old Boys) in February; the BOBs flexed their muscles and were victorious. The ladies will have more golf with the BOBs later in the year which will be a friendly alliance!
After an outstanding meal, the entertainment at the Ladies’ Luncheon was provided by Iwona Januszajtis, a mezzo soprano who is much in demand and has a wide-ranging career of performing and composing.
Iwona surprised all those present by being supported in one of the pieces of music by the Ladies’ Captain, two further lady golfers and a few guest singers. Some audience participation was required for the final fun piece: ‘Coconut Woman’. It sounded as if a good time was had by all.
The annual South of England v the Rest of the World match was played and, by 2 points only, was won by the ladies from South of England. The journey from parts from the Rest of the World was obviously too much!
Charitably, West Byfleet Golf Club ladies scoured their wardrobes to find items of clothing they no longer wished to hold on to and filled more than 20 large bags to be donated to the women prisoners in HMP Send. The generous gesture has been hugely appreciated.
Sadly, West Byfleet Ladies did not manage to get through to the next round of the Pearson Trophy. Our ladies, under enthusiastic leadership of Sue Austin this year, played well but they came up to some fierce opposition. However, they played some wonderful matches.
The Academy has started again with 4 enthusiastic new members and we trust that they will enjoy their time learning to play or improving their golf. Our professionals, Jon and Dan are helping them on the way with lessons and support.
We have an excellent programme of competitive and fun competitions for all our members, from experienced players to those completely new to golf, and everyone has the opportunity to join in to play and have a good time. Thursdays and Saturday or Sunday mornings are when the ladies section run competitions and fun events and there is also a roll-up which meets on a Tuesday morning.
Our Ladies’ Captain heads up the Ladies’ Committee who meet once a month to plan the smooth running of all ladies' events, be they golf or social meetings. The Committee works closely with the Office Admin team to organise all friendly and competitive matches and has a voice on the club Main Committee to ensure that the views of the Ladies Section are fully represented.

As a club within Surrey we are affiliated to Surrey Ladies County Golf Association and as such are eligible to play in the following competitions:
The Hicks Trophy & Hicks Plate - A scratch singles match play with a team of five playing Surrey clubs, both home and away. Normally players of handicaps between 1–12. First round losers qualify for the Hicks Plate. West Byfleet has won the Hicks Plate in recent years.
Pearson Trophy – A handicap competition for players with handicaps of 13 – 32. A drawn competition of 4/5 other Surrey clubs who play both home and away. The winners of each group play against each other. The overall winner then represents Surrey against other counties.
Centenary Bowl & Centenary Plate - An interclub scratch singles , match play with five players playing both home and away, open to players with a handicap of 10 and over. West Byfleet has been a winner of the Centenary Plate in recent years.

Alongside these are a number of very popular “friendly” ladies and mixed matches played home and away against other clubs. Over the years these matches have led to many strong friendships being formed.
Bridge -For those keen to play cards there is a well organised regular Bridge Club where members and friends can join in organised events, or meet anytime to play, chat and have afternoon tea.
