The Ladies’ Section is an important and integral part of West Byfleet Golf Club with currently around 100 lady members, contributing both to overall participation in competitions and the many social events held at the club.
For 2017 the Captain and Ladies’ Captain decided to combine fundraising efforts for Woking and Sam Beare Hospices rather than have a different charity each. Since the Woking Hospice first opened its doors in 1996, it has supported thousands of local patients and their familes through some of the most difficult times of their lives. It has now outgrown the premises and has moved to a brand new building in Goldsworth Park which is purpose built with state of the art equipment. Much fundraising is needed to equip it and it is hoped that our fundraising efforts will be sufficiently successful to equip two of the bedrooms. For this we need to raise £25,000.
The ladies’ section has been particularly busy this summer so far with many different competitions, some serious and some fun ones. The serious competitions were the Spring meeting played in May in which ladies compete for a number of trophies especially the Locke King Trophy and Bleakdown Trophy.
Kath O’Connor, a popular lady member and a +2 player, had a major achievement on Championship day in early June by playing a net 66 on the course, on a sweltering day. It caused such a stir that articles were written about it in the local press and a golfing magazine. Her achievement might encourage many young ladies to take up golf by making use of our excellent and friendly Golf Academy which the club runs each year.
We took part in the Ping competition and the Coronation Foursomes.
Charity Day was a very enjoyable and hugely successful event. The Ladies’ Section did exceptionally well under the guidance of our Ladies Vice Captain, Clare Cull in making a profit in excess of £3,600 by running several stalls in the Spike Bar. Several raffles were run, one of which was for 2 patchwork quilts made by local quilting groups in memory of one of our ladies, Joy Baker.
Of course, all profits made on the day from player entries to auction in the evening and a number of other on-course activities and competitions was added to the charity account which is looking very healthy indeed for our worthy cause this year: Woking and Same Beare Hospices.
Unfortunately, the Exchange day in June at Hindhead was rained off but, in August, the ladies had a wonderful day at Farnham where they all received a very warm welcome whilst Farnham ladies that day were entertained to golf and lunch at West Byfleet Golf club.
Although it is only August, we are already thinking ahead to Autumn events such as our Autumn Meeting, an informal Invitation, our rescheduled Hindhead Exchange Day and Finals Day to name but a few!
If you have never been to West Byfleet Golf Club before, come and visit us some time. Ring the office or pop into our excellent proshop.
We have an excellent programme of competitive and fun competitions for all our members, from experienced players to those completely new to golf, and everyone has the opportunity to join in to play and have a good time. Thursdays and Saturday or Sunday mornings are when the ladies section run competitions and fun events and there is also a roll-up which meets on a Tuesday morning.
Our Ladies’ Captain heads up the Ladies’ Committee who meet once a month to plan the smooth running of all ladies' events, be they golf or social meetings. The Committee works closely with the Office Admin team to organise all friendly and competitive matches and has a voice on the club Main Committee to ensure that the views of the Ladies Section are fully represented.

Pearson Trophy – A handicap competition for players with handicaps of 13 – 32. A drawn competition of 4/5 other Surrey clubs who play both home and away. The winners of each group play against each other. The overall winner then represents Surrey against other counties.

Alongside these are a number of very popular “friendly” ladies and mixed matches played home and away against other clubs. Over the years these matches have led to many strong friendships being formed.
Bridge -For those keen to play cards there is a well organised regular Bridge Club where members and friends can join in organised events, or meet anytime to play, chat and have afternoon tea.
